yeah it works flawlessly on Wayland, that wasn’t what I was saying. I’m saying on x11 it doesn’t work for gaming because of the setup. Say I want to use I3 or Herbstfluftwm. If I open a game and ONLY stay on that game it’s fine. but if I navigate away from it to look at a web browser or check discord and then toggle back to the game it results in a black screen or simply shows the desktop and the game is unresponsive. And from what I was able to find online the consensus seems to be it’s because x11 doesn’t play well with integrated and discrete dual GPUs.
just upgraded my instance. pretty good, very smooth and yay animated profile avatars!
ugh I know. In hindsight I would have never bought it.
ugh I wish I could but my Laptop set up says “no, you can’t.” discrete Nividia GPU with onboard AMD GPU and gaming on x11 is a no go for me. So my only choice is wayland :/

I don’t understand what exactly this is as it doesn’t go into great detail especially the whole “flavors” thing. There’s Ember, Social, Community, and Corporation so what’s the difference between each. in the documentation for installation it tells you to pick a flavor but again doesn’t describe what each “flavor” actually is.
So is this like meetup or some kind of neighborhood app/social group thing? I’d be willing to set up an instance on my server of it today but I don’t even know what this really is.
when I first switched to linux I used mint for all of two weeks, was an awful experience and almost made me go back to windows until someone told me to try cachyos instead.
I haven’t used Mint since but I might install it on my VM to give it another crack since likely it was personal user error that made it awful for me. Just had constant issues with my nvidia gpu.
I tried it, paid for it, cancelled it. I tested it with the same queries with ddg, startpage, brave, and qwant via 4get. The results were essentially the same. Kagi did provide more context in the description of the results but it wasn’t anything I would pay a premium for. the majority of features I just didn’t use, the assistant and fastgpt were a waste, lenses were fine and having fediverse on by default is neat but nothing I’d call home about.
If it were cheaper sure, I might stick with it but I can’t justify the price to anyone wanting to use a search engine. $5 for 300 searches a month is a joke. I also don’t like the fact that if you want to pay with something other than a credit card (paypal, venmo, etc) you get charged extra cause Kagi doesn’t want to eat the fees. Also there’s zero option to opt out of paying for the “AI” features, you can turn them off sure…but you’re still going to pay for them.
If your internet usage consists of constant searching and LLM use for searching then sure, you’re going to be paying $10+ a month and be happy with it. But there was nothing Kagi offered that knocked my socks off. if anything, felt like I was getting scammed.
Up until a few weeks ago I was running my own private SearXNG instance and it’s not just you, even I noticed on my OWN instance that it had progressively gotten worse. Initially it was great so I just left it be but then the performance and results just became horrible. It was hit or miss if the thing would even load or not when other instances on my server like my akkoma, piefed, redlib, forgejo, etc all ran smooth as silk.
Eventually I ditched SearXNG and switched to 4get which much better and faster results. thing never goes down and the search results have been fantastic.

honestly it’s better to just host your own private instance as if you want a lemmy and mastodon instance that others can also set up you not only have to admin it you also have to moderate it.
Also keep in mind it’s NOT just actual people signing up but you also have to deal with all the bots which WILL register en masse to your instances. a lot of people won’t mention this. bots flock to this stuff like flies on shit. It’s not worth it unless you plan on really dedicating the time to actively admin your instances.
I run Akkoma instead of Mastodon and Piefed instead of lemmy. both of which were easier to setup than mastodon/lemmy and less resource heavy.

it’s always disappointing when people all about FOSS and shit suggest Proton to people looking to switch from google. no, don’t do that. use Tuta or self host or ANYTHING other than Proton. it’s such a shit company that does not deserve the praise they receive.

yes you’re right but you and I both know they aren’t concerned about that because going back to your first sentence that’s what this is really about but masked as a “won’t anyone think of the children” so it’s easier to swallow (no pun intended)

considering the data is from 2018 and the report published in 2020 it’s probably not a “little” higher but a hell of a lot higher.
At this point it’s more likely bots are advertising/pushing agendas to other bots.
yup, haven’t gotten around to it but I’ve been meaning to. How’s it working out for you? I might end up doing that today.
Oh I’ve been done with Cachy for awhile, I switched to NixOS. I just like having everything there in front of me plus using comma to run stuff without installing it is awesome.
Doom Emacs. made me switch from Vim/Neovim to it. Love it.
yeah when I first switched to Linux everyone suggested Mint to me, like they always do, so I tried that. It was miserable, didn’t work well with my Nvidia GPU, and almost made me go back to Windows. then someone suggested CachyOS to me and I’m glad they did.

utilizing things like ReviOS or something, by passing the forced account creation, etc.
Bazzite is like a easy newbie introduction to Linux. It’s really hard to mess up Bazzite, like really hard. In the same regard it can also be a pain to install anything outside of their ecosystem. If you run it with Distrobox it’s not a big deal but I don’t see a lot of new users going that route. If you’re just looking to browse, stream, and game than Bazzite is perfect and you don’t need anything else. Beyond that? Distrobox or use a different distro.
I tried Bazzite, I didn’t like it, I found it too limiting but I do see the appeal of it.
