.zip has the closest instance policies to .ee. A lot of .ee refugees moved there (me included). Some also moved to piefed if you’re considering that.

Assuming your group has a considerable amount of non tech savvy people, I would suggest Friendica just for the familiarity, since it’s supposed to be like facebook and it would be easier for people to use. I don’t know if it has groups though. You might also sacrifice admin/mod capabilities. I’m not familiar how good friendica’s admin tools are (if any).
Another person already said it, but the issue is the lack of third spaces. You don’t need to physically go to an office to get a sense of community. Working remotely makes it easier to get a sense of community if there are third spaces because you’re not stuck in a building for 8 hours. If your only source of community is your workplace, then you have other problems.
Tildes.
I think it’s simply because more people use mastodon and lemmy, so there’s more incentive to work on them, and there are a lot more contributors to development.
Do you know where I can see a list of piefed instances?
Found this: https://github.com/sponsors/twingyeo-kr.
A quick translation says:
Hello, twingyeo.kr is a Mastodon instance operated by Team Onstables Co., Ltd. Currently, in order to create a ‘space where everyone can rest comfortably’, our instance is covering all operating costs with the income from the software development sector of Team Unstablers Co., Ltd., the main operator, without any means of generating profits such as advertising.
Maybe the instance is down that’s why it’s unreachable.
The heat index in my city right now as I type this comment is 42C/107F. And summer is just starting. This is gonna suck.
Fantastic! Been waiting for this for a long time.
I never said that was the only reason. We’re talking specifically about image proxying vs mirroring in this thread.
I tested this yesterday and it does work!
That’s credit towards the admins who acted quickly. That’s why you’ll see instances defederate from an instance if their admin is not active and doesn’t take action against illegal content in a reasonable time, because it can quickly get out of hand. Now if content isn’t proxied and is always mirrored, not only will the admin have to defederate from the problem instance, but they will have to go and clean up whatever was copied on their instance as well.
Except breaking end-to-end encrypted messaging. That’s the one sore spot.
