  • First they sell the fear, then they sell the “solution”. Poor on poor crime is down to record lows. What’s up is government crime on poors, that has skyrocketed.

All these cameras do for the people who paid for them is provide a memento of the thing being stolen from the front yard. If you think you’re going to show the video to a cop, and they’re going to say, “Hey! I know that guy!”, and then run off and retrieve your truck that’s too big to fit in your garage, you are sorely mistaken.

Also, if you install these things inside your house, you can bet dollars to donuts that someone is gooning to your antics. I mean, besides your dad.

  • Home “security” cameras cause far, far more angst and grief than they do benefit.

“Hey, mister policeman, here’s a video of a guy stealing my truck.”

“Yep, that’s a guy stealing your truck, alright.”

    “…”

“Should’a put it in your garage.”

“My garage is full of crap I bought on Amazon. Some of it, I haven’t even opened. Also, the truck didn’t fit in the garage after I had it lifted.”

“The report is filed, I’ll let you know if we find anything.”

“You’re not going to find anything, are you?”

“We’re not even going to look.”

One-third of Nextdoor is lost pets. One-third is people selling crap they bought at Goodwill. And, the last third is people asking about the “suspicious” (non-white) man who walked down the sidewalk past their house at 5AM.

  • It’s like when IBM left its PC manufacturing to Lenovo. And, probably a ton of other examples I’ve never paid any attention to.

It’s starting to feel like only old people look at a screen bigger than six inches. That, combined with displays becoming a commodity item, leads to the manufacturing being abandoned to commodity manufacturers. If Sony could bring anything of value that would justify the cost of holding on to this, they would. Sony’s name hasn’t been synonymous with quality for decades now, that’s partly their own doing through poor choices, but also the quality of cheap displays is perfectly adequate for most people.
