I bought several Kasa devices before they started charging for a subscription for the newer cameras and the switches and outlets are functional and reasonably easy to use.

I recently bought a switch and micro relay from Insteon and was very impressed with it. I am using it to run a second remote outlet on another circuit for my upper kitchen cabinet lights. They have the option of being run fully off grid via dual mode eop/wireless back to a master keypad. The hardware itself is also very nice imo.

It really depends though, if you want to do analog in or out, relay control, or use existing hats, you are bought/forced into the ecosystem. If you are just using it as a small computer, yeah roll with whatever. To me, it’s always occupied the void between an arduino and a sffpc or when I wanted to do compute and analog/digital control on something.

I had an 8350 machine with 32gb of ram when if was in season and while it never really left me short of power, the intel 4770k and 4790k were better performers. That may not be the case anymore with stuff being more multi-core optimized but at the time, the intel single core performance was so much better than the 8350s which made a bid difference in gaming.

My old rig was an 8350 overclocked to 4.5 on liquid, crossfired 3gb 7950hd’s, and 32gb of matched corsair dominator ddr3 all in a corsair 230t chassis with the bright orange paint and led fans.

How long until the forks get deprecated? Is that even a possibility? I don’t really know what goes into making this but I would imagine if it depends on some chunk of the mozilla source code, eventually it will be out of sync with the major releases or current browser standards. What does that mean for the TOR browser since its based on firefox right?

I ask that as someone moving from firefox to libre/waterfox.

I bought the Emby lifetime license about 2 years ago when the plex remote streaming stuff first started getting talked about. It coincided with my server refresh so it ended up working out. I have been really happy with Emby so far.

One thing to note is that music streaming on remote devices is WAY better on plex, Emby behaves more like a mapped network drive running over the internet to a local music player that then forgets your position on pause or when you move away from the remote app/device whereas Plex is actually functional as a modern music player. I keep a local copy of my music library on my phone anyways and okay through Gonemad so it is a non-issue for me but Emby should work better than it does in that case.

Plex also allows/provides “live” tv (with ads) which can be nice if you are into that, and there is the “free” streaming library too which Emby doesn’t offer. I’ll keep plex around for those features but non-of my stuff is/will be hosted on Plex.

Oh look, another example of a product that worked fine without internet connectivity and was improved by adding extra bullshit you don’t actually need that then gets worse when those features can’t function properly because their server is offline.

We got a basic roomba 650 (the one that crashes into stuff and randomly cleans) like 10 years ago and it still works fine (well, as well as it ever worked which wasn’t great), you program the time and day of the week with physical buttons, and leave it alone.

Yeah, I don’t care that it has become less profitable for the producers. Given the demand for energy right now and how little is being actively done to make solar more ubiquitous ESPECIALLY in low-income areas, I want the bottom to fall out. Make it too cheap to justify anything else being used during daylight hours.

The arguments in favor of keeping fossil fuels have always been based on cost and up-time. If you can’t argue on cost then you can only justify keeping them available when you don’t have sun.

Is this an overcapacity issue or an underutilization issue? Yeah, I get the financial distinction and implications of this but given everything shouldn’t this be a justification to just use the extras on a purely cost basis?

Setup was easy, it just works, its stable, and if you want the regular updates, just get the lifetime model on sale. I bought it becaue I didn’t want to spend time screwing with setup and just wanted to get my data moved snd running.

I have not kept up with their raw disk lineup to be honest, they may be garbo but I am not sure. I have been using toshiba and seagate drives for the last 8 years which have been great.

The WD devices also offer very limited long term support. The MyBook Live had a software exploit found a couple years after launch that allowed remote access to your files and enabled third parties to wipe your drives. Wd said “wow, that sucks, here is a $15 coupon for a new one. No, we aren’t gonna patch it. Buy a new one” I will never buy another wd device except for the raw discs.

Unrelated but did you know that Libraries oftentimes have cd’s, dvd’s, and even audiobooks available to borrow?

I make one off fixtures to position parts for fiberglass layups or woodworking and its amazing to be able to get really precise fitups without needing a cnc machine or expensive metal for single use stuff.

I am using syncthing to directionally sync my music from my server to my phone. I like having the local copy on both devices so I don’t worry about losing cell service/internet.

I started a quick and easy supercharger install on my truck 2 years ago and now I have to pay a tow truck to move it to our new house because it was neither quick or easy. I feel your pain.

Once I got it up and running, it has been like you described, way better than windows.
