Was cruising with my riding group in Virginia, when I took a curve too fast, too wide. Ended up in the hospital, with a broken ankle and badly bruised shoulder.
It could’ve been worse. FAR worse. Thankfully, I subscribe to ATGATT, and made it out with relatively minor injuries. If you, or anyone you know, thinks it’s OK to skimp on riding gear, let this be the reminder you need to hear: it isn’t, and WHEN you crash, not if, you will regret not wearing proper gear.
Stay safe on the roads, Lemmy riders.
Were you wearing high top racing boots? One of the biggest injuries to motorcyclists is surprisingly the foot/ankle/lower leg.
For shoulder, do you have an airbag?
I was wearing riding shoes with higher tops, well above the ankle. Must’ve landed on it funny, but only broke the very tip off the ankle bone. As for my shoulder, no airbag unfortunately. It’s already healing up though, and it wasn’t super damaged to begin with, so I’m not worried.
The shoes in question:

Airbags are less important, but they might have saved your shoulder. Just something to think about when looking for new gear. All the new tech is making everything safer.
Nah that wont do it, my understanding is that a ton of motorcycle injuries are foot/ankle related (because a big bike falling on your foot is bad) and in order to mitigate that risk you need something high top like this https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gaerne-balance-pro-tech-boots-1?sku_id=10451167
But I’m a COMPLETE noob.
I actually do have boots like that, but they make it hard to shift (no ankle flexibility whatsoever) so I didn’t wear them that day.
I’ve heard there are some good middle grounds.
I’m looking at these for instance. https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/alpinestars-andes-v2-drystar-boots?sku_id=1565469
